Introduction :

One of the most exciting filmmakers working today, Rian Johnson has been a staple in American Cinema this decade. Today I want to discuss all of his films that I’ve seen — Looper, Knives Out, Brick, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

4.) Star Wars: The Last Jedi [3.5/5]
Possibly the most controversial film of all time, Johnson’s instalment in the equally controversial Sequel Trilogy is pretty good. Equally Intelligent and Interesting as all of his work, it’s only dragged down by convulsions and Star Wars the franchise. There are plotlines here, where you can see how uninterested Johnson is in them — particularly the Rose & Finn plotline, but when it comes down to the heart of the film — Rey, Luke, and Kylo it excels. The story is compelling, interesting and fulfilling. Easily the most unique and intelligent Star Wars film, the parts where it fails it makes up with great storytelling and genuinely gorgeous visuals. While it’s at the bottom of my list it’s still a good film that I can appreciate.

3.) Looper [3.5/5]

Convoluted, Unique, and Wild, Rian Johnson’s venture into Time Travel is simply put bonkers. I really enjoy Looper, while it’s not as smart as the rest of his work, its easily the most fun, and entertaining one. The logic of it all doesn’t work, but it’d be absurd of me to take that as a negative. The film does falter, mainly — its one of those films where it’s a good time, but there’s nothing beyond that.

2.) Knives Out [4/5]

Wicked, Enthralling, and Intelligent, Knives Out is Rian Johnson at his best, it’s his Magnum Opus (for now). It hardly misses a step, and it never fails to impress (on rewatches), and it manages to keep your attention throughout. There’s not a second where it feels insubstantial or “boring” it manages to be interesting throughout. It’s hard to top this, but one does and I’m sure most of you have realised what it is.

1.) Brick [4/5]

Dissapointed ? I understand, but Johnson’s High School Neo Noir is still his best in my opinion. How can you not be utterly entranced by Brick ? It’s so refreshing, and brilliant, I have a hard time describing why I love it so much. Rian Johnson made this film dirt cheap, and as an amateur but yet its filled to the brim with exciting filmmaking and style. I think part of why this is my favourite is how raw it is, it’s not polished — it’s real.

Conclusion :

While Rian Johnson isn’t one of my favourite filmmakers, he’s certainly one I really admire and pay close attention to. If you haven’t seen any of his work I’d start where he started with the brilliant Brick and if you’re just interested in the cream of the crop then just check out Brick & Knives Out and through this I hope you read something interesting or wanted to check out/start watching Rian’s work !!
